In hand-drawn animation, each character pose is drawn onto a sheet of paper in pencil first. These pencil drawings are then printed (during the 'Xerography' process) onto the transparent 'cels' or 'celluloids'. These cels are then painted by hand on the back of each cel. The cels are photographed one by one over a background to create the animation.
